If a colorful egg basket makes you ridiculously happy, you’re among friends.
The Hot Mess Homestead is a color-focused hobby breeding program with an emphasis on beautiful birds, incredible egg color, good temperament, health and vigor.
Our breeding pens include birds selected for shades of blue, green, olive, chocolate and those glorious little speckles that make chicken people lose their minds.
Around here, there are beautiful eggs and beautiful birds.
There are also muddy boots, dirty coops, forgotten bags of shavings, children, animals making questionable decisions and plans that occasionally go completely off the rails.
And that’s kind of the point.
The Hot Mess Homestead is about sharing the real side of homesteading while raising healthy, beautiful birds and creating some seriously gorgeous egg baskets.
No perfect farmhouse required.

Beautiful Is Great. Healthy and Kind Matter More.
We love gorgeous feathers and spectacular egg color, but our breeding decisions don’t stop there.
We select for health, vigor and temperament with the goal of raising strong, robust chickens that can be trusted around our family.
Aggressive birds don’t stay in our breeding program.
Because a beautiful chicken is considerably less charming when you have to enter the coop armed like you’re storming a castle.

Somewhere along the way, sharing this little homestead turned into a community.
A very large, slightly chicken-obsessed community.

Hi, I’m Savannah.
I originally wanted chickens so our family could have fresh eggs.
Adorable.
That plan lasted approximately three days.
What followed was chicken math, ducks, geese, breeding projects, colorful eggs, social media and a community I never could have imagined when we traded city life for a little piece of land beside my parents.
I’m not trying to create the perfect homestead.
I’m building our homestead, raising birds I love and sharing the good, the ridiculous and the occasionally feather-covered reality along the way.
